„Papers, please. Ah, you’re returning to Motherland, comrade? Hand me your entry permit and I’ll let you go. Let me see… I’m sorry, comrade, but this document is not valid anymore. Yes, I know, but that was yesterday. Last night the government decided to change the law. Sorry, but I can’t let you pass. Goodbye. Next!”

I bet many of you have experienced cruelty of civil servants. All of those documents, signatures, stamps… In „Papers, Please” you play as an immigration inspector who controls people who want to cross the border of a fictional communistic country, Arstotzka. It seems that stamping documents and detaining shady characters is a swell job. The problem is it’s underpaid and our protagonist has got a family to feed. You will face many tough choices, while playing this game. Should you cut heating, so you could buy food? Or maybe you should let this criminal cross the border, because he’s offering you a bribe so high, that you can buy medicine for your sick son?

„Papers, Please” is a puzzle game developed by Lucas Pope. It’s a bitter satire on communism. Players have to check documents of people who want to cross border to Arstotzka. Each time you have to examine various sets of documents, including passports, certificates of vaccination, entry permits, entry permit supplements, etc. Every mistake costs you money; a piece from your precious salary you need in order to support your family. Sometimes there is a random event that will change the gameplay, for example a terrorist attack. You can also meet someone who will have some special task for you, which usually involves violating some protocols.

We’ve already begun our work.
Glory to Arstotzka, comrades!
